Benefits of Social Media to Small Business

social mediaSocial Media is nearly everywhere we look in society. Twitter accounts and Facebook pages are used by old and young, celebrities and unknown alike. This week we sat down with Main Street Marketing Co’s Social Media Manager, LaDonna Harris, and asked her a few questions about the importance of Social Media to your small business.

LaDonna feels that Social Media is an effective way for you to connect with the public. Nearly everything in today’s society is online, or happens online. If your business has a Social Media platform, and is consistently interacting with customers and clients online, it is noticed. She adds that even a “brick and mortar type of business”, such as an auto shop or grocery store, can benefit from building relationships through Social Media.

LaDonna also feels that Social Media is a valuable way to enter the global market. With the prevalence of online shopping in today’s society, Social Media is a great way to get your product noticed outside of your geographic region. By getting noticed further and further away, you can grow your clientele and build your business.

Another benefit to Social Media, according to LaDonna, is the number of people you can reach in a very short period of time. She adds that there have been times when Social Media has spread news faster than the traditional news sources have been able to.

Finally, we asked LaDonna if she had any tips for adding Social Media to your business. The first thing LaDonna suggested is not to worry about getting all the different Social Media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Google+).  She suggests choosing two or three, and focusing on them. LaDonna also suggests that you post something to Social Media at least two or three times throughout the day. Keeping your posts current shows your followers and customers that you have an online presence. Finally, LaDonna suggests outsourcing the management of your Social Media accounts. This is something that someone else can take care of, leaving you more time to focus on building your business.
